We are back for a third edition of Polarise Nordic Film Nights in Cinema Galeries!

Nine Nordic films will be screened over almost ten days in Brussels.

This year’s programme includes Brussels Premieres, which are unique to Polarise Nordic Film Nights, documentaries, comedies, drama and the BEST OF the current film season together with a visionary short and Q&As with some of the filmmakers and actresses.

20 January 2024: Opening film – Brussels Premiere

• PARADISE IS BURNING from Swedish director Mika Gustafson, winner of the Orizzonti Award for Best Director at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival. An exquisite and striking story of sisterhood, followed by a Q&A in the presence of lead actresses Bianca Delbravo, Dilvin Asaad, and Safira Mossberg – in collaboration with Ramdam Festival – Tournai.

23 and 24 January 2024: BEST OF 2023

• GODLAND from Icelandic director Hlynur Palmason. Premiered at Polarise in 2023 and shortlisted for the Oscar race, this masterfully shot saga is a theatrical must-see.
• FALLEN LEAVES directed by Finnish Maestro Aki Kaurismäki. Winner of the Cannes Jury Prize, Lux Audience Award nominee and shortlisted for the Oscars. An invitation to experience the melancholic and tender world of two lonely souls looking for love and humanity.

27 and 28 January 2024: Documentary Selection

• CINEMA LAIKA from Finnish director Veljiko Vidak: Cult director Aki Kaurismäki and his friends build a cinema in an old foundry somewhere in Finland, bringing the village and its inhabitants back to life. A joyful documentary about the magic of cinema and collective action. Avant-Premiere organised in support of Supernova Coop.
• SONGS OF EARTH by Norwegian Director Margreth Olin. An ode to nature and our connection to it, accompanied by breathtaking images of the Oldedalen valley in Vestland, Norway. Avant-Premiere for Belgium, Norway’s Oscar contender, produced by iconic actress and directors Liv Ullmann and Wim Wenders.

29 and 30 January 2024: Of Vices and Fears: surreal situation comedy

• THE HYPNOSIS by Swedish Director Ernst de Geer. Vera and André are in love and in business together but when she decides to quit smoking using hypnotherapy all her inhibitions suddenly fall apart, resulting in comically awkward and cringe-worthy situations, both at work and with André, masterfully interpreted by the lead actor from The Worst Person in World. Winner of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, this is another Belgian Premiere.
  + Short film FÁR (INTRUSION), which won a Special Distinction at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. It explores what happens when a seagull hits a window and Anna is unable to shake off the incident.
• NORTHERN COMFORT by Icelandic director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson. Afraid of flying? You are not alone. A Falklands veteran, an uptight property developer, an influencer and their incompetent instructor are all thrown together on a high-end course designed to help them conquer their crippling fear of flying. This comedy avant-premiere is guaranteed to give you the shivers!

31 January 2024: New wave from Greenland

• KALAK by Swedish director Isabella Eklöf. A subtle, tough and moving film about pain and the search for redemption. An emotional journey through the heart of its main character. Best Director at San Sebastian Film Festival, in partnership with OOFF Oostende Film Festival, the film will be followed by a Q&A with the Director.

1 February 2024: Grand Finale!!

• DREAM SCENARIO by Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli (remember the gritty Sick of Myself). We close Polarise with a promise: you will dream about Nicolas Cage, who plays an everyman who becomes famous once millions of strangers start dreaming about him. A joyously twisted and festive conclusion to the 3^rdedition of our films from the North.

Since September 2021, POLARISE Nordic Film Nights has organised, co-hosted and promoted more than 50 screenings and events, often in partnership with some of Brussels’ most interesting festivals and cultural institutions, including the Cinéma Galeries, BOZAR, Cinéma Palace and Pink Screens.

The films will be screened with English subtitles, French and/or Dutch subtitles , to accommodate both Belgian and International audiences. We care about the gender balance and diversity of our selection, as well as the environment and are always looking for ways to share the expense and logistics of hosting talent and promoting films with other Belgian Festivals.

Neuf films nordiques ont été sélectionnés pour la troisième édition des POLARISE Nordic Film Nights. Au programme : des films montrés en exclusivité, des documentaires, des comédies, des drames, le BEST OF de la saison cinématographique en cours, ainsi que des courts métrages visionnaires et des séances de questions-réponses avec des cinéastes et actrices.

20 janvier 2024 : Film d’ouverture – Première bruxelloise

• PARADISE IS BURNING de la réalisatrice suédoise Mika Gustafson, lauréate du prix Orizzonti au Festival international du film de Venise 2023. Une histoire de sororité et de passage à l’âge adulte, suivie d’une séance de questions-réponses en présence des actrices principales Bianca Delbravo, Dilvin Asaad et Safira Mossberg – en collaboration avec le Festival Ramdam de Tournai.

23 et 24 janvier 2024 : BEST OF 2023

• GODLAND du réalisateur islandais Hlynur Palmason. Présenté au festival Polarise en 2023 et sélectionné pour la course aux Oscars, cette saga magistralement filmée est un incontournable à voir absolument sur grand écran.
• FALLEN LEAVES réalisé par le maestro finlandais Aki Kaurismäki. Lauréat du prix du jury à Cannes, nommé pour le prix du public du LUX Award et en lice pour les Oscars. Une invitation à découvrir l’univers mélancolique et tendre de deux âmes solitaires en quête d’amour et d’humanité.

27 et 28 janvier 2024 : Sélection de documentaires

• CINEMA LAIKA du réalisateur finlandais Veljiko Vidak : Le réalisateur culte Aki Kaurismäki et ses amis construisent un cinéma dans une ancienne fonderie quelque part en Finlande.
• SONGS OF EARTH de la réalisatrice norvégienne Margreth Olin. Une ode à la nature et à notre lien avec elle, accompagnée d’images à couper le souffle de la vallée d’Oldedalen dans le Vestland, en Norvège. Présenté en avant-première pour la Belgique, ce film norvégien est en lice pour les Oscars et a été produit par Liv Ullmann et Wim Wenders.

29 et 30 janvier 2024 : Nos vices et nos peurs, humour nordique.

• THE HYPNOSIS du réalisateur suédois Ernst de Geer. Vera et André sont amoureux et travaillent ensemble. Quand Vera décide d’arrêter de fumer grâce à l’hypnothérapie, toutes ses inhibitions disparaissent, entraînant des situations comiques, gênantes, voire carrément embarrassantes. André est magistralement interprété par l’acteur principal de « The Worst Person in the World » (Julie en 12 Chapitres). Lauréat du Festival international du film de Karlovy Vary, ce film est également présenté en première sur le territoire belge.
  + Le court métrage FÁR (INTRUSION), rentré du Festival de Cannes 2023 avec une distinction spéciale. Dans ce film de cinq minutes à peine, une mouette se cogne contre une fenêtre. Anna en est témoin et ne se remet pas de l’incident.
• NORTHERN COMFORT du réalisateur islandais Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson. Vous avez peur de prendre l’avion? Vous n’êtes pas seul. Un vétéran des Malouines, un promoteur immobilier coincé, un influenceur et leur instructeur incompétent sont tous réunis dans un cours haut de gamme conçu pour les aider à vaincre leur peur paralysante de l’avion. Frissons garantis pour cette comédie en avant-première belge !

31 janvier 2024 : Nouvelle vague venue du Groenland

• KALAK de la réalisatrice suédoise Isabella Eklöf. Un film subtil, dur et émouvant sur la douleur et la recherche de la rédemption. Un voyage émotionnel à travers le cœur de son personnage principal et les villes et villages du Groenland. En présence d’Isabella Eklöf, lauréate du prix special du jury au festival du film de San Sebastian, le film sera suivi d’une séance de questions-réponses en partenariat avec le festival du film d’Oostende OOFF.

1er février 2024 : Clap de fin !

• DREAM SCENARIO du réalisateur norvégien Kristoffer Borgli (souvenez-vous du grinçant Sick of Myself). Nous clôturons Polarise avec une promesse : vous rêverez de Nicolas Cage, qui incarne un homme ordinaire qui devient célèbre lorsque des millions d’étrangers commencent à rêver de lui. Une conclusion joyeusement tordue et festive pour la 3e édition de Polarise Nordic Film Nights.
