Jan has been running away (from himself) ever since he was sexually abused by his father. He has moved his family to Greenland, where he yearns to be part of the open, collectivist culture and become a ‘Kalak’ (the local word meaning dirty Greenlander). But can he truly become ‘another’? And what price must the people around him pay for his quest? This intimate and political tale lingers in the mind long after viewing.
Kalak is the screen adaptation of Kim Leine’s autobiographical novel set in Nuuk and the little Eastern Greenland village of Kulusuk. It is the second feature film by Swedish filmmaker and writer Isabella Eklöf (after Holiday, which was released in 2018). It has been branded as the flagbearer for a new wave of Greenlandish films. Her script addresses many important and hard-hitting themes (including: abuse, colonialism, drugs, family, sex, love and the exoticisation of others) with great subtlety.
Kalak was selected in competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize and the FIAPF Jury Prize for Best Cinematography.

Jan s’est réfugié au Groenland avec sa famille, depuis qu’il a été victime d’abus sexuels de la part de son père. Il y aspire à faire partie de la culture groenlandaise et à devenir un “Kalak” (une expression aux significations variées dont la traduction est “sale Groenlandais”). Mais peut-il vraiment le devenir ? Et à quel prix pour tous ceux qui l’entourent? Un récit intime et politique qui reste dans les esprits longtemps après le visionnage.
Kalak est l’adaptation du roman autobiographique de Kim Leine qui se déroule à Nuuk et dans le petit village de Kulusuk, à l’est du Groenland. Il s’agit du deuxième long métrage de la réalisatrice et scénariste suédoise Isabella Eklöf (après Holiday, sorti en 2018). Il a été présenté comme le porte-drapeau d’une nouvelle vague de films groenlandais. Son scénario aborde de nombreux thèmes, notamment : les abus sexuels, le colonialisme, la drogue, la famille, le sexe, l’amour et l’exotisation) avec une grande subtilité.
Kalak a été sélectionné en compétition au festival du film de San Sebastian, où il a remporté le prix spécial du jury et le prix du jury de la FIAPF pour la meilleure photographie.
