Iconic film director Aki Kaurismäki, poet Mika Lätti and friends build a cinema in an old foundry somewhere in Finland. They recycle wood, metal, and furniture to complete their project. Film culture’s arrival in the abandoned foundry inspires a renewed love of life in the village, and among its inhabitants.
This film demonstrates the magic of cinema, change, and collective action.
Produced “in close harmony with Kaurismäki’s cinematic style” by by Sylvie Pialat, Kino Laika is also a nod to fellow cult filmmakers Jim Jarmush, Juho Kuosmanen (Compartment N. 6) and Mikko Myllylahti (The Woodcutter Story), who all put in cameo appearances.
Since Cinéma Laika reminds us of the beloved Cinema Nova in Brussels, Polarise Nordic Film Nights invited the Supernova cooperative to present their great idea: what if a cooperative could buy the Cinema Nova, protecting it until the end of this century?
