Nordic films come back to Brussels for the second edition of Polarise Nordic Film Nights! Meet us at the Cinema Galeries to share an outstanding selection of features and short films on 1 – 3 February 2023.
The selection includes everything from feel-good to contemplative features, music documentaries, and visionary shorts. Naturally, the screenings will be accompanied by meetings and Q&As with key members of the cast and crew.
Opening Double Bill: The festival launches with two gems on Wednesday 1 February!
We start with the premiere of Woman at Sea by Dinara Drukarova, which won acclaim at the 2022 San Sebastian Film Festival and is inspired by best-selling novel Le Grand Marin by Catherine Poulain. You may be familiar with Dinara Drukorova from her role as the illuminating and entertaining female lead in Compartment no.6 by Juho Kuosmanen (our first Polarise Nordic Film Nights opening film). We now have the privilege of showcasing her work as a director. This first feature is a poetic and engaging story about the exhilarating freedom of leaving the past behind to travel to the edges of the earth and live as a North Sea fisherwoman. Starring Belgian actor Sam Louwyck and Icelandic celebrity Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Lamb, Blackport), Woman at Sea is a celebration of freedom.
Our second opening film is the Norwegian comedy Sick of Myself by Kristoffer Borgli, which will carry you to the urban landscape of Oslo, where 30 year-old Signe is ready to do anything, by which we mean EVERYTHING, to get attention. From lies and manipulation to stealing and nurturing toxic relationships, making for a movie experience that’s both uncomfortable and funny to watch. This wild trip was included in Un Certain Regard at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and stars Kristine Kujath Thorp (Ninja Baby). It takes audiences on a rollercoaster of conflicting emotions as the story unravels, leaving no-one unmoved.

Polarise Nordic Film Nights
La deuxième édition arrive à Bruxelles du 1 au 3 Février 2023!
Polarise Nordic Films Night revient au cœur de l’hiver pour une deuxième édition. Rendez-vous au Cinéma Galeries, à Bruxelles, pour découvrir une sélection de ce que le cinéma nordique à offrir de meilleur.
Au menu de la programmation 2023 : comédies iconoclastes, longs métrages d’auteurs qui revisitent la grammaire du cinéma, documentaires en mode musical et sélection de courts avant gardistes. Mais surtout, un série d’opportunités pour rencontrer et échanger avec les équipes qui travaillent sur les films.
Le mercredi 1er février 2023, le festival ouvre avec un doublé :
La première de Grand Marin (Woman at Sea) de Dinara Drukarova, remarqué au Festival de San Sébastien 2022. Le film est une adaptation libre du livre homonyme de Catherine Poulain, beau succès de librairie. Après son interprétation lumineuse dans Compartment no.6 de Juho Kuosmanen (le film d’ouverture des Polarise Nordic Film Nights 2021), Dinara Drukarova passe derrière la caméra. Son premier long métrage – dans lequel elle joue également- est le récit poétique et attachant d’une femme, Lili, qui laisse son passé derrière elle pour travailler sur les bateaux de pêche, en Mer du Nord. Tourné en Islande, Grand Marin bénéficie de la présence de l’acteur belge Sam Louwyck , très convaincant en vieux loup de mer, et du célèbre acteur islandais Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Lamb, Blackport).
La projection de Sick of Myself de Kristoffer Borgli, une comédie norvégienne, qui passe du sublime au comique et dont l’héroïne, Signe, aux prises avec une relation amoureuse toxique, est prête à tout, pour attirer l’attention: mensonges, manipulation, vol… Le film, retenu dans la sélection Un Certain Regard au festival de Cannes en 2022, trouble autant qu’il fait rire. L’actrice Kristine Kujath Thorp (Ninja Baby) emmène le public sur des montagnes russes d’émotions conflictuelles.

Noordse films komen terug naar Brussel voor de tweede editie van POLARISE Nordic Film Nights!
Ontmoet ons in Cinema Galeries op 1 – 3 februari 2023 voor een uitstekende selectie Scandinavische speelfilms en kortfilms.
De selectie omvat alles van feel-good tot beschouwende films, sarcastische komedies, muziekdocumentaires en visionaire kortfilms. Natuurlijk gaan de vertoningen gepaard met een ontmoeting en Q&A met leden van de cast en de crew.
Opening Double Bill: Op woensdag 1 februari start het festival met twee parels!
We beginnen met de première van Woman at Sea, die zich afspeelt in IJsland, van Dinara Drukarova. De film is geïnspireerd op de bestseller Le Grand Marin van Catherine Poulain en viel in 2022 op het filmfestival van San Sebastian in de prijzen. U kent Dinara Drukarova wellicht als de verhelderende en vermakelijke vrouwelijke hoofdrolspeelster in Compartment no.6 van Juho Kuosmanen (onze allereerste Polarise Nordic Film Nights openingsfilm). We hebben nu het voorrecht om ook haar werk als regisseur te laten zien. Deze eerste film is een poëtisch en innemend verhaal over de opwindende vrijheid om het verleden achter je te laten en naar de uithoeken van de wereld te reizen en te leven als een vissersvrouw aan de Noordzee. Met de Belgische acteur Sam Louwyck en de IJslandse beroemdheid Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Lamb, Blackport) in de hoofdrollen viert Woman at Sea de vrijheid van het leven.
Onze tweede openingsfilm is de Noorse komedie Sick of Myself van Kristoffer Borgli, die u meeneemt naar het stedelijke landschap van Oslo, waar de dertigjarige Signe tot alles, maar dan ook ALLES, bereid is om aandacht te krijgen. Leugens, manipulatie, stelen en het onderhouden van giftige relaties zorgen voor een filmervaring die zowel ongemakkelijk als geestig is om naar te kijken. Deze wilde reis was in 2022 onderdeel van Un Certain Regard op het filmfestival van Cannes en heeft in de hoofdrol Kristine Kujath Thorp (Ninja Baby). De film neemt het publiek doorheen het verhaal mee in een achtbaan vol tegenstrijdige emoties en laat niemand daarin onberoerd.
In januari 2023 zal het volledige programma van films, evenementen, feesten en gasten bekend worden gemaakt!
